Dangers of Abortion In First Trimester

Dangers of a abortion pills in Nigeria.

Majority of women in Nigeria, and other parts of the world; usually don’t realize they’ve conceived until a missed period. This is why abortion is majorly a big risk for younger women .

To start with, the first trimester (up to 12 or 13 weeks) is the most common period for abortion procedures, and identified as a risk period for the woman. Understanding these risks—both physical and psychological—is essential for making an informed health decision.

Below is a breakdown on major damages of abortion in the first trimester:

1. Physical Complications

Most first-trimester abortions are performed via medication (the pill) or aspiration (a minor surgical procedure). While rare, the following complications can occur:

  • Incomplete Abortion: This happens when fetal tissue remains in the uterus. It often requires a follow-up surgical procedure to prevent infection or heavy bleeding.
  • Hemorrhage: While light bleeding is expected, some individuals experience heavy, prolonged bleeding that may require medical intervention or, in extreme cases, a blood transfusion.
  • Infection: Bacteria can enter the uterus during or after the procedure, leading to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Signs include high fever, abdominal pain, and foul-smelling discharge.
  • Uterine Perforation: In surgical cases, a medical instrument may accidentally pierce the uterine wall. While often self-healing, it can sometimes damage nearby organs like the bladder or intestines.

2. Long-Term Reproductive Health

Research on the long-term impacts of a single, uncomplicated first-trimester abortion suggests minimal impact on future fertility. However, specific risks exist:

  • Cervical Damage: Repeated surgical abortions can sometimes weaken the cervix (cervical insufficiency), which may increase the risk of premature birth in future pregnancies.
  • Scarring: Though rare in the first trimester, intrauterine scarring (Asherman’s Syndrome) can occur following an infection or aggressive scraping, potentially leading to difficulty conceiving later

Dangers of Abortion Pills

Just as abortion during the first trimester is not advisable, due to unprecedented damages, so is abortion pills. Below is a run down of some life-threatening damages of abortion pills such as postnol 2, misoprostol, mifepritone, etc.:

1. Heavy Bleeding (Hemorrhage)

One of the most immediate dangers is uncontrollable bleeding. Unlike a normal period, this bleeding can be so heavy that it leads to “shock,” where the body begins to shut down.

  • The Cause: Drugs like Misoprostol cause the womb to contract. If the dose is wrong or used too late in pregnancy, the bleeding can become a life-threatening emergency.
  • The Result: Severe anemia, fainting, and in many cases, the need for an urgent blood transfusion.

2. Incomplete Abortion and Infection

Many “pearls” or pills do not fully clear the pregnancy out of the womb. When tissue is left behind, it is called an “incomplete abortion.”

  • The Danger: This leftover tissue decays inside the body, leading to a serious infection known as Sepsis.
  • Warning Signs: High fever, foul-smelling discharge, and severe shivering. Without immediate hospital treatment, sepsis can lead to organ failure or death.

3. Damage to the Womb (Uterine Rupture)

Most of the chemicals in herbal pearls or high doses of certain drugs can be too strong for the walls of the uterus (womb).

  • The Risk: The womb can actually tear or rupture. This causes internal bleeding that you cannot see from the outside but can be felt as excruciating pain.
  • Long-term Loss: If the damage is severe, doctors may have to perform a Hysterectomy (removing the womb entirely) to save the woman’s life, meaning she can never have children again.

4. Secondary Infertility

Dangers of Abortion In First Trimester

Even after surviving an unsupervised abortion, the “hidden” damage can show up years later.

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Unsafe methods often introduce bacteria into the reproductive system, causing chronic inflammation and scarring in the fallopian tubes.
  • Blocked Tubes: This scarring can block the tubes, making it impossible for a woman to get pregnant naturally in the future.

5. Kidney and Liver Failure

Many herbal “abortion pearls” sold on the streets contain toxic substances that the body cannot process.

  • Organ Damage: Because the liver and kidneys are responsible for filtering toxins, these organs are the first to get damaged.
  • The Outcome: Some women end up requiring dialysis or suffer permanent liver damage because of the “natural” ingredients found in traditional abortion mixtures.
